Text "Happy Labor Day" in red, white, and blue with stars and stripes, resembling the American flag, on a white background. Celebratory mood.

Labor Day might mostly be recognized as a chance for a long weekend getaway, but the day is intended to commemorate the over 150 million people in the United States workforce. Here are some fun facts about the holiday to enjoy on your day off:

  • The first Labor Day celebrated in the United States was on September 5th, 1882 in New York City

  • Labor Day is also known to some as the “unofficial NFL season kickoff” due to the fact that 99.4% of the time, the NFL plays its first official season game on the Thursday following the holiday

  • Though the day might be considered the end of summer (and hot dog season), fall doesn’t officially begin until September 21st. You still have some time to visit the pool!

  • Labor Day is also partly to celebrate the shifts we’ve had in updated labor laws: in the late 1800s, the average adult worked twelve hours a day, seven days a week. Children as young as five were also working in dangerous conditions

  • Labor Day is considered one of the busiest weekends for travel, alongside Christmas and Thanksgiving

  • The U.S. Department of Labor actually didn’t exist until more than two decades AFTER Labor Day was founded!

We hope you have a relaxing day to spend with family and friends!
