Young Children's Program Playground

Creating pathways and play spaces to enhance connectivity and enjoyment
Colman Engineering provided civil site design services for the JMU Young Children’s Program playground, enhancing accessibility and play opportunities on campus. Coordinating closely with the architect and JMU, Colman Engineering successfully located the playground in an area with limited space, carefully designing the layout to fit within the constraints of a tight site.
The project began with a topographic survey to map the proposed development area. Using this data, Colman developed a site design for a connecting path between the R9 parking lot and Memorial Hall, along with plans for the adjacent playground area. The design involved addressing multiple utility crossings and required adaptability as site conditions, such as unexpected utilities, were encountered.
The final design ensures seamless connectivity and a safe, engaging environment for young learners and their families.
