Edith J. Carrier Arboretum "At Home in the Woods" Family Garden

Designing a site plan for interactive play zones while improving accessibility and addressing erosion and stormwater control issues
To support its vision of creating an interactive and educational children's garden for families and visitors of all mobility levels, JMU’s Edith J. Carrier Arboretum undertook a series of site improvements.
Colman Engineering collaborated with the architect, design team, and arboretum staff to provide civil engineering services, including site planning for the interactive play zones, ADA-compliant pedestrian routes, and expanded parking. The project emphasized an environmentally sensitive design, addressing stormwater runoff and systemic erosion of the walking paths. Colman also designed stormwater management systems, a pumped sewer connection to the city tie-in, and irrigation meters to support the site's sustainability.
Construction administration ensured successful implementation, creating a space that is not only functional and accessible but also fun and engaging for children. These enhancements improve visitor accessibility and experience while fostering deeper connections with the natural world.
