Darcus-Johnson Hall Renovation

Delivering site design and infrastructure solutions to support Darcus-Johnson Hall’s transformation
As part of the $5.5 million state-funded renovation of Darcus-Johnson Hall, Colman Engineering provided essential civil engineering services to support the building’s transformation into a modern, accessible academic space while preserving its historic exterior.
Colman’s role included subsurface utility design, land surveying, and bioretention design to address site drainage and sustainability needs. The team also addressed runoff issues, including those impacting the underground tunnel system, ensuring effective site drainage. Extensive back-and-forth negotiations were required to finalize the design of a long ramp that met accessibility requirements and project standards.
Throughout the project, Colman collaborated with the Division of Engineering and Buildings (DEB) to ensure compliance with state requirements. Schematic plans, preliminary layouts, and working drawings were delivered, and regular site visits ensured that the civil components aligned with the project’s goals of improving accessibility and system functionality, preparing Darcus-Johnson Hall to serve JMU’s students and faculty for decades to come.
