Our Client Founded in 1908, James Madison University is a public university located in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. JMU is fast becoming one of the nation’s leading lights in higher education because students enjoy unusually engaged relationships with world-class faculty who are here because they want to pursue knowledge and make teaching their No. 1 priority.
Project Description As part of the $5.5 million state-funded renovation of Darcus-Johnson Hall, Colman Engineering provided essential civil engineering services to support the building’s transformation into a modern, accessible academic space while preserving its historic exterior.
Colman’s role included subsurface utility design, land surveying, and bioretention design to address site drainage and sustainability needs. Throughout the design phase, Colman delivered schematic plans, preliminary layouts, and working drawings.
Regular site visits ensured that the civil components aligned with the project’s goals of improving accessibility and system functionality, preparing Darcus-Johnson Hall to serve JMU’s students and faculty for decades to come.
