What is "A Better World," Anyways?

Man drags a fallen tree branch in rain, holding a blue umbrella. He's on a wet street with green bushes and white house in the background.
A better world starts with small acts of selflessness—like clearing a neighbor's fallen branch in the pouring rain, simply because it’s the right thing to do.

At Colman Engineering, we talk a lot about "engineering for a better world." It’s our company's purpose, but it's also our purpose as engineers. It's baked into the Engineer's Creed to be "committed to the advancement and betterment of public health, safety, and welfare."

But what does a better world look like?

Last week, we asked our team to imagine it. To take a step back from daily tasks and envision a world made new. Here's what the team came up with . . .

A better world is one with good communication.

Where people tell the truth, speak clearly, listen fully, and aim to understand, not just to reply.

It’s marked by patience, kindness, and selflessness.

A world where we put others first. Not because we have to, but because it's the right thing to do.

It fosters mutual respect and strong community.

Where we see the value in other people and in their contribution to the good of society. Everyone plays an important part. Everyone is highly valued.

It’s a world where justice matters.

Where fairness isn’t just an ideal, but an everyday reality. Where systems work for the good of all, not just a few.

It’s a world where technology helps solve real problems.

Where innovation is used to meet basic needs—clean water, shelter, health, safety—especially for the most vulnerable.

It’s full of people of good character.

Where integrity and honesty are the norm, not the exception.

And yes… it’s a world with no mosquitos. And better trash solutions. (Hey, we’re practical people.)

We can't build the whole better world ourselves—but we can build pieces of it. We can show up with integrity, day after day, and let that shape the world around us.

So, what does a better world look like to you?
