5K Trail Feasibility Study

5K Trail Feasibility Study

Exploring potential course routes for approximately ten race events per year

University Recreation (UREC) of James Madison University (JMU) is planning a trail that will serve as part of a course for 5K race events. The proposed 5K course starts at the University Park Gatehouse, goes north through the woods toward the Edith J. Carrier Arboretum, loops around the UREC facilities via existing roads, sidewalks, and trails, and returns through the woods to end back at the Gatehouse. The course is expected to host an estimated ten 5K race events per year.

Colman Engineering worked closely with UREC and Facilities Management staff to evaluate multiple alignment options, ultimately determining a preferred route that balances functionality and enjoyment for participants. The team prepared preliminary layout drawings and a feasibility and cost estimate report, ensuring the design is both practical and engaging, creating a valuable new amenity for the JMU community.
