Carrier Drive Waterline Risk Abatement

Upgrading aging infrastructure to ensure reliable water service for a busy university campus
An old waterline—which runs through a busy area of the James Madison University (JMU) campus—had deteriorated due to age and overburdening and needed to be replaced. It had burst the year before, causing a major inconvenience to the city and JMU.
Colman Engineering met with the City Engineering Superintendent to discuss the goals and challenges for the project. They designed a new waterline to replace the decaying one, coordinating with JMU and VDOT to be sure their requirements were being addressed.
Because the old line runs through a busy, utility-crowded area, it was a challenge to find a suitable location. The Colman Engineering team provided several options, narrowing it down to the one that was most convenient and suitable for all the stakeholders.
The new and improved water line will help the city continue to serve students and neighbors, without concerns about disruption.
