Customer Story James Madison University Lakeview Hall Renovation
Renovated facility provides dynamic space for cross-disciplinary collaboration.
Our Client Founded in 1908, James Madison University is a public university located in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. JMU is fast becoming one of the nation’s leading lights in higher education because students enjoy unusually engaged relationships with world-class faculty who are here because they want to pursue knowledge and make teaching their No. 1 priority.
Project Description JMU was looking to transform an aging building into a high-tech classroom and work environment that showcases the university's innovative education models.
Colman Engineering worked with JMU and Blue Ridge Architects to understand their goals for the project. They needed to address fire flow needs for the renovated building and its new sprinkler system, but it needed to be completed and approved within a month.
Colman Engineering created plans for a water main extension, fire hydrant, and fire suppression line. They also developed a site improvements plan to address the water main construction impact on the site, as well as needed curb additions and entrance gate removal.
Colman Engineering was able to facilitate interaction and agreement between JMU and local authorities, resulting in having the design approved for construction ahead of schedule.
JMU completed the $1.7 million renovation of Lakeview Hall, and it is now the home to 4-VA, JMU X-Labs and the Center for Assessment and Research Studies.
