Customer Story James Madison University East Campus Drainage Study
University BMPs found to have higher capacity than previously accounted for.
Our Client Founded in 1908, James Madison University is a public university located in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. JMU is fast becoming one of the nation’s leading lights in higher education because students enjoy unusually engaged relationships with world-class faculty who are here because they want to pursue knowledge and make teaching their No. 1 priority.
Project Description As JMU continues to grow, so does its need for stormwater quality/quantity capacity. They needed to know whether their existing water quality and quantity measures had been maxed out by the current development.
The Colman Engineering team conducted a survey of the existing stormwater system in the approximately 100-acre area, which includes buildings and infrastructure. Colman Engineering identified all existing BMPs, as well as the size and location of stormwater pipes and inlets, and performed a hydrologic and hydraulic analysis, modeling the entire system.
The study showed that the ponds, as well as the BMPs throughout the site, were adequate and able to provide more water quantity/quality than previously accounted for. This provides significant savings for JMU and allows them to continue to develop the site, without overtaxing their current stormwater capacity.
